Variation VIII

For the eighth edition of Variations, the studio is designing and producing a set for the Culturebox TV programme, a melodious journey encompassing classical, pop and electronic music.

Variation VIII

The set designed for the event is based on two key principles: light and movement.

01

Unity and harmony

Overlooking the stage, the light-filled ceiling is made up of a repeated line of inflatables and LEDs, suspended several metres above the stage.

These air-filled modules, attached to metal rails, change position/height during the concerts and play an active role in the performance. The white inflatables also act as reflectors for the coloured lighting, echoing the identity of each artistic performance. At the front of the stage, scaffolding adorned with neon lights towers up on either side of the stage on which the artists perform.

The installation, which is both luminous and kinetic, transforms during the performances, adapting completely to the concept of the Variations programme.

Unity and harmony

The storyboard created by the studio involves a spatial landscape, constructing an abstract, poetic “non-organic” narrative.

02

Combination and fit

Emanating from this metal structure with its curved lines, the lighting and smoke help to create different atmospheres. A unique ambiance emerges, similar to that of an airport runway. The scaffolding is a nod to the TV aerial, while the inflatables conjure up a feeling of weightlessness, vibrating to the beat of the music.

The installation is lightweight, scalable and modular.

Combination and fit

A single set design generates a whole host of different sets.

03

Practical and fast

Prefabricated metal structures, which are as easy to assemble as they are to dismantle, fulfil the brief when it comes to mobility. They adapt perfectly to the ephemeral format of the event, as well as to the studio’s philosophy of re-using materials in its projects. To produce this set, Paf atelier reused inflatables from a previous project (Collectible 2023). The scaffolding was borrowed from the theatre hosting the event.

  • Notes

The end result owes much to the carte blanche offered by the Sourdoreille and the genuine partnership forged with the theatre’s technical teams. This means that it fulfils all the technical constraints in terms of staging and recording the concerts to be broadcast on France TV. Artists presented: Jeff Mills & Yaron Herman — Duke Ellington, Fakear & Mayra Andrade — Cesaria Evora, Kendal & Quatuor Zaïde — John Carpenter
